Billas Pardesi (Irrfan Khan) is a poor barber who lives with his wife Bindiya (Lara Dutta) and their two children in the village of Budbuda. Though struggling, Billu lives an uneventful life until Bollywood superstar Sahir Khan (Shah Rukh Khan) comes to the village for a film shoot. Billu mentions to his family that he was once a friend of superstar Sahir and then Billu;s children spread the rumors about their father's friendship. The villagers on hearing their Billu could be their ticket to meeting the star, shower him with gifts and promises on condition Billu make contact for them. Embarrassed by his poverty, not wanting to impose himself but everyone works themselves up and so Billu is forced to make several ill-fated attempts at contacting Sahir duing film shootings in the village.
